The Shoremen
opened up the 2006 campaign with a solid 41-10 victory over the Polar Bears of
Toledo Woodward. Some first-game jitters
showed in the opening half as
A.L. kicked off to
open the game, and Woodward hit two quick passes to move the ball to the
Shoremen 30. A pass interference call on
3rd & 14 gave Woodward a new set of downs at the 16. But the defense stiffened and held the Bears
to a 31 Daniel Sandoval field goal.
Scott Shaffer returned the ensuing kickoff 35 yards to the 50, and the
Shoremen offense needed just seven running plays to tally the first TD of 2006
as Jeff Tell took a pitch around right end for the score. Drew Becker hit the PAT for a 7-3 lead.
After the teams
exchanged possessions for the rest of the first quarter, Makkonen Rice ran a circle route out
of the backfield, caught a short pass on the dead run, and scampered 83
yards to give Woodward a 10-7 lead. That seemed to ignite the Shoremen, as they
put together a smooth 60 yard drive featuring a nice 19 yard catch and run by
Scott Davey. Scott Shaffer went straight
up the gut from seven yards out for the score.
A missed PAT kick left the score at 13-10. After a Woodward punt, the next Shoremen
drive looked like it might stall out as they faced 4th & 5 from
the Bears’ 14. But Tim Harris fired a
strike to Tom MacGeorge in the left corner of the end zone for a 20-10 halftime
lead.
The second half
was all Shoremen. On Woodward’s first
offensive play of the half, Joe Vasiloff sacked QB
Sam Wallace, forcing a fumble that was recovered by Sean Linder. On the next play, Tell broke an arm tackle at
the line and raced 20 yards to make the score 27-13. Tell scored again on a five yard run late in
the third period. Meanwhile the defense
made life miserable for Wallace and the rest of his offense, notching a couple
more sacks and totally disrupting the Polar Bear offense. The Shoremen reserves took over in the fourth
period and Alex Elamin scored the last TD of the night on a one yard run.

his first Friday-night scoring pass.
