Trailing by three
due a lackluster first half performance, the Shoremen came out smoking after the
intermission, launching a deadly passing attack that must have left Westlake
wondering if it was really a good idea to line up their safeties two yards off
the ball. Like Midpark two weeks ago,
the Demons stacked the line with eight and nine men in the box, daring the
Shoremen to throw. Chris Jedlicka made
them pay in a big way, completing nine of 13 passes for 236 yards. Jimmy Hessel caught five balls including a 46
yard TD pass and a couple of 43 yarders to set up Collin Lucas touchdown
runs. The Maroon & Gold “D” played
well, giving up one big play of 68 yards for Westlake’s only touchdown. The defense was dominant in the last two
quarters, capping a scoreless half with a nice goal line stand midway through
the fourth period to seal the victory. It was Coach Dlugosz’ 20th straight
win over the Demons, who have not beaten the Shoremen since he took the helm in
1992.
Westlake returned the opening kickoff to their 35, and quickly
hit a 15 yard pass to midfield. Throwing
quick passes out of the spread, Westlake
drove to the Shoremen 16, but ran out of gas and settled for a 33 yard Alec
Ferrel field goal. Starting at their own
17, Avon Lake
came right back with a 14 play drive to Westlake
five. But they couldn’t cash in as a
pass to Dontez Smith on fourth down was stopped for no gain. Westlake
went three & out, punting to their 35.
Again the Shoremen drove the ball into to scoring position, but couldn’t
punch it in on fourth down from the one.
Again, the defense kept the pressure on Westlake, forcing a punt after one first
down. On 3rd & 7 from the
Demons’ 46, Jedlicka hit Hessel in stride on a quick slant. Jimmy turned upfield, turned on the jets, and
outran everyone for a 46 yard TD. The
first of Brills five PAT’s put the Shoremen up 7-3. The lead didn’t last long, though, as Westlake’s Kyle Perkins
caught a short pass going to the right, turned the corner, and sprinted 68
yards for the score and a 10-7 halftime lead.
The Shoremen began
the second half on their 29, and made a statement on their first play. Collin
Lucas rammed through the middle of the line, blew right over a would-be
tackler, and rumbled for 21 yards to midfield.
On 3rd & five, Jedlicka lofted a rainbow to Hessel on a
fade down the left sideline, good for 43 yards to the two. Lucas rammed into the end zone from there,
and the Shoremen led 14-10. Westlake threatened again
as Jonathan Brick broke a 42 yard run down to the A.L. 20. But the defense held, and on 4th
& 13 Ferrel shanked a 40 yard field goal attempt. Two runs produced a first down at the 31, and
then on 3rd & 4 Jedlicka found Kyle Kuhar running down the left
hash for 52 yards to the nine. Lucas
picked up six on first down, and then plowed in from the three to stretch the
lead to 21-10. Again it was three and out
for the Demons, with the punt rolling out of bounds at the Shoremen 35. On first down Jedlicka arched another
beautiful fade to Hessel, good to the 22.
Smith ran three times for a first down at the ten, where Jedlicka hit
Danny Robinson for another touchdown.
After the kickoff to their 33, the Demons faced 4th & 1
at their 42. Brusk tried to run for the first , but came up short as he was swarmed under and the
Shoremen took over. On fourth down from
the 36, Jedlicka tossed another beautiful pass to Joe Pappas for 22 yards. Three plays later, Smith blasted in from the
five and the margin was up to 35-10.
Brick ran a nice return to the Avon
Lake 40, and Westlake drove to a first down at the
nine. But on fourth & goal from the
one, Brick’s run to the left was stopped for no gain and the Shoremen took over
with about six minutes left. Backup
tailback Wyatt Ohm and the Shoremen reserves produced three first downs and ran
all but nine seconds off the clock to wrap up the win.
