The Shoremen returned to their winning ways in the 2006 SWC opener, shutting out Westlake 23-0.  The game featured the return of tailback Kevin Mansnerus, who missed the first three games with a broken toe.  Kevin ran well, as did fellow tailbacks Scott Shaffer and Alix Elamin.  Fullback Mike Haddad added some bruising inside runs as Avon Lake’s rushing attack controlled the ball for much of the game.  Tim Harris added some timely passing, hitting a number of key 3rd  down throws as well as a couple of bombs.  Meanwhile, the Shoremen defense completely shut down the Demons’ Wing-T running game and applied constant pressure when Westlake tried to throw.

The Shoremen received the opening kickoff and started from their 20 after a holding penalty negated a good return by Steve Mares.  After converting on 4th & one at their own 29, they stalled near midfield and had to punt.   Two Westlake runs went nowhere, and a quarterback scramble on 3rd down came up two yards short as the Demons punted again.  Starting at their own 35, the Shoremen rolled 65 yards on six plays.  After a couple of short runs, Harris hit MacGeorge on a curl and Tom cut back over the middle for  a 28 yard gain.  Lining up in the double-wing “Jet  formation, the Shoremen mixed it up as Scott Shaffer gained 14 on a counter, Drew Becker picked up 9 on the jet sweep, and then Mike Haddad bulled the final 10 yards on a fullback trap.  Becker’s extra point made it 7-0.  Becker followed up with a high, booming kickoff all the way down to the Westlake 10.  But the Demons’ Max Ouzts found a seam in the left side of the kick coverage, cut to the sideline, and raced all the way to the A.L. 10 before Anthony Dominguez made a touchdown-saving tackle.  A first down run gained nothing, and the quarterback tried to scramble under heavy pressure but was caught for no gain on second down.  Great coverage by the defensive backfield forced an incompletion, and then the Shoremen completely destroyed Westlake’s momentum,  blocking a field goal try that was finally downed at the Avon Lake 30.

After the teams exchanged punts, the Shoremen started their drive with a nine yard gain as Haddad broke three tackles.  Lining up in the stacked I on second down, Harris faked to the tailback and then hit MacGeorge running wide open on a post pattern for a 41 yard gain to Westlake’s 30.  Shaffer broke a couple tackles for an 11 yard gain, and two Haddad carries set up first & goal at the seven.  Alix Elamin powered off left tackle for the score, and another Becker PAT made it 14-0 at halftime.

The Shoremen opened the second half with a couple of nice drives into Westlake territory but turned the ball over on downs twice, first at the Demon 33 and then at the then at the three early in the  fourth quarter.  But on first down, the Demons’ quarterback Dan Lammers tried to roll right for a pass attempt.  But Sean Linder closed on him so quickly that he never had a chance,  and the safety pushed the lead to 16-0.   After a Shoremen punt, Westlake found themselves facing 4th and four from their own 36.  Lammers dropped back to pass but was sacked by Justin Malloy at the 28.  Then after a holding call set the Shoremen back to the Westlake 40, Harris found Scott Davey streaking down the right side and hit him in full stride for the touchdown.  Becker tacked on the extra point,  and then the Shoremen reserves took over to preserve the shutout.

Notes:

·       Tim Harris had his best night yet as the Shoremen signal caller,  throwing for 157 yards including some beautifully thrown deep balls to MacGeorge, Davey, and Jordan Frank.

·       Scott Davey & Mike Haddad each scored his first varsity touchdown.

·       On defense, the Shoremen starters yielded just a single first down and less than 40 total yards in their three plus quarters of action.
