The Shoremen totally dominated an overmatched  South High  team by a score of 58-0.  Virtually the entire game was played on the Flyer’s side of the fifty yard line.  South was never able to advance past their own 35 until the last few minutes of the 4th quarter as Coach Dlugosz emptied the bench.

Avon Lake received the opening kickoff, which went out of bounds and was spotted at the 35.  The Shoremen marched the 65 yards in 9 plays, with Chris Rau crashing in from five yards out.  Johnny Lyons booted the first of eight straight extra points for a 7-0 lead.  Each team went three and out and the quarter ended with no further scoring.

The flood gates burst for the South defense in the second quarter as the Shoremen scored on a series of short drives.  The Flyers started their drives from the 10, the 11, the 20, and the 20 on their own end of the field.  The stifling Shoremen defense kept them pinned deep, and a series of short punts set up the Maroon & Gold with a short field time after time.

Avon Lake’s starters played only one series in the second half, with Murello bolting in from the seven to make it 42-0.  The Shoremen reserves kept the pressure on, scoring once on offense & twice on defense, with a fumble return for a TD plus a safety early in the fourth.

Notes:

·       Seven different Shoremen reached paydirt against South.  Four tallied their first varsity touchdowns:  Jordan Frank, Kevin Mansnerus, Andy Peterson, and Anthony Yelenski.

·       The extra point team of long snapper Scott Davies, holder Chris Nealon, and kicker John Lyons were perfect again, converting all eight attempts.  Going back to last year, Lyons has now hit 20 PAT’s in a row.  John has moved up to 16th place on the all-time Shoremen scoring list.

·       Lyons also booted six of nine kickoffs into the end zone for touchbacks.

·       The win is the Shoremen’s 28th straight regular season triumph.
