Senior quarterback Trent Toy had a monster game as the Shoremen shut out an overmatched St. Jean de Brèbeuf squad 50-0.  Toy hit on 12 of 14 passes for 255 yards and four touchdowns.  Alex Grunick caught scoring passes of 44 and 80 yards, while Ronnie Willoughby pulled in TD tosses of 27 and 46 yards. Avon Lake used the passing offense to open up the running game, which produced 224 yards on the ground.   The defense scored for the second week in a row, with Justin Arkey returning an interception 15 yards to paydirt.

After Brad Brill put the opening kickoff into the end zone for a touchback,  the Braves went three and out, punting from there own 22 to the Shoremen 48.  Two Zach Johnson rushes netted a first down, a pass in the right flat to Willoughby picked up 15, and Johnson ran a counter for a first down at the 14. But a false start moved the Shoremen back, Toy missed Willoughby at the goal line on third down, and Brill’s field goal attempt on fourth down was too ugly to describe.  The Braves took advantage of the home team’s sputtering offense, gaining a first down at the 35 on a pass over the middle, then moving to the Shoremen 46 on a counter  run by Mevand Wassell.  But on second down Jake Young sacked QB Jesse Matthews for an 11 yard loss, and then on third down Brian Mihalik ran Matthews down for a huge 17 yard loss.  Pete Lancione returned the punt to the Braves’ 47, and one play later Toy hit the tightly covered Grunick in stride for a 44 yard TD.  Brill’s PAT made the score 7-0.  St. Jean moved into Avon Lake territory again as Wassell took an option pitch down the left sideline for 32 yards to the Shoremen 42 as the quarter ended.

The defense held and forced another punt, this one to the Avon Lake 21.   Three runs by Dontez Smith produced one first down, and a 15 yard pass to Willoughby on the left sideline was good for another.  Toy went to Willoughby again, this time in the left flat, for another 15 yards.  After a holding penalty set the Shoremen back, Toy found Grunick on the left side and then Willoughby on the right for a first down at the 27.  On third and ten, Toy Found Willoughby all alone in the left corner of the end zone and it was 14-0 Shoremen.  The defense forced another punt, with a holding call on the return moving the ball to the Avon Lake 20.  On first down, Toy heaved another bomb toward Grunick.  A defender tipped the ball, but Alex managed to pull it in , break a tackle, and race across the goal line for an 80 yard scoring play and a 21-0 lead.  A couple of penalties and another sack by Mihalik left the Braves facing 4th & 35 from their own five.  The punter took a knee for an intentional safety,  and Lancione returned the free kick near midfield.  As time was running down in the half, Toy scrambled 26 yards to the one, and Johnson crashed over from there to push the margin to 30  at the half.

The Shoremen struck quickly in the second half.  Smith returned the kickoff to the St. Jean 48. Three plays later, he bounced outside for a 20 yard gain to the nine.  Three more Smith runs netted another TD and it was 37-0.  Lancione returned another punt into Braves’ territory at the 46, and Toy wasted no time, hitting Willoughby with a touchdown bomb on the next play.  The Shoremen began to rotate in the reserves, and the second offense moved the ball close to the Braves goal line, but turned it over on downs.  No worries, though, because Justin Arkey picked off a pass at the 15 and ran it in for the score to make it 50-0 Shoremen.   The reserves played the entire fourth quarter and preserved the shutout.
