After scouting the
Shoremen’s last few games, Midpark came in with the expected game plan: load up nine in the box and bet the Shoremen can’t
beat you passing. But the Meteors lost
the bet big-time as quarterback Chris Jedlicka and his receiving corps burned
them early & often, piling up most of their 154 passing yards in the first
half to lead the way to a 28-0 shutout.
On the other side of the ball,
Brad Brill’s
opening kickoff floated down to the one yard line, but the Shoremen gave up their
first decent return of the year, a 39 yarder out to the Midpark 40. The Meteors came out running and drove as far
as the A.L. 36, but a 4th& 8 pass fell incomplete and the Shoremen
took over on downs. The teams exchanged
punts, and then Jimmy Hessel started the aerial festivities as he somehow managed
to get his toes down inbounds on a fade down the right sideline to the 16. Colin Lucas carried for six yards and then
Smith swept left for an apparent score, but the first big holding call of the night
pushed the ball back to the 23. Undaunted,
Dontez picked up a first down on carries of six and 12 yards before powering
into the end zone for a 7-0 lead. Aided
by a facemask penalty after a completed pass, the Meteors were again in
Shoremen territory as the second quarter began.
But Mickey Steiner ended the threat as he picked off a deep fade at the seven
yard line. On first down, Jedlicka hit Hessel
in stride on a post route good for 46 yards to the Meteor 47. Three plays later, Jedlicka faked to Smith on
a jet sweep and hit Brett Bass for 19 yards over the middle. After a first down at the two, Jedlicka
carried over the right side for the score to make it 14-0. Again the Meteors moved into Shoremen territory,
and this time it was senior safety Mike Russell who stepped in front of the
tight end for the pick. A holding
penalty negated Mike’s nice return, and the Shoremen started from their 29. Larendai Ellis picked up 15 yards and a first
down, and two plays later Jedlicka found Bass wondering alone, WAYYYY behind
the secondary, for a 51 yard TD and a
21-0 halftime margin.
The second half got
a little sloppy, as Smith’s 57 yard TD was negated by holding on the first
series. After a nice punt by Max Seipel,
Bass intercepted an out pattern at the Midpark 38. Back on offense, Brett ran a jet sweep to the
right sideline, cut back, and dragged a pile of defenders an extra 15 yards to the
10. Jedlicka swept right end down to the
one, and Smith finished the drive with a one yard run. Bass picked off a deep pass on the next
series, and the Shoremen reserves finished out the game. The second teamers moved the ball pretty
well, but fumbled it away twice in the fourth quarter.
