The Shoremen were
firing on all cylinders Friday night as they downed a pretty physical Midpark team
by a score of 35-7. A potent passing
attack, led by the combination of junior quarterback Trent Toy and
senior wideout Kevin Morissette, finally took some of the pressure off the
running game. Mike Mansnerus paced the
rushing attack with 194 yards on 27 carries, including a season’s long of 74
yards for a touchdown. The defense
played another strong game, with only a tipped pass on a long fade pattern that
bounced to a Meteor receiver preventing a shutout. The “D” even helped out with the scoring as
Nick Marinkov returned an interception for a TD. The kickoffs were deep and well covered, the
punts were all fair caught, and the PAT’s were dead
center.
The first quarter
was pretty much a punting contest.
Receiving the
second half kickoff, our guys came out on fire.
On 3rd & 9 from his own 41, Toy hit Morissette with a
perfect bomb down the left sideline.
Kevin made a super catch despite interference by the DB and took the
ball down to the 16. Mansnerus carried
for five yards to the 11, then on the next play he
went around the left side and cartwheeled into the
end zone. Brill’s kick made it 14-7 just
two and a half minutes into the third period.
Midpark had to once again punt after just three plays, this time to the
A.L. 31. On the second play of the
drive, Toy hit Morissette on another bubble screen in the left flat and Kevin
pick up 31 yards behind a nice block by Ronnie Willoughby. On 3rd& 4, it was Morissette
yet again on the bubble, this time for a gain of 17 yards to the Meteor 15. The Mansnerus runs punched it in and the
Shoremen were starting to smell blood in the water. John Rogers sacked Biada on the first play
after the kickoff, and on third down T.J. Thompson picked off a pass at the
Meteor 45. A sack on first down led to a
punt, this one fair caught at the 12. Midpark
moved to midfield before their drive stalled and they punted again. The Shoremen returned the favor, then on
third & long Thompson picked off his second pass of the game at the
Shoremen 26. On the next play Toy handed
to a sprinting Mansnerus on the jet sweep.
Mike got to the corner, broke a tackle, and streaked 74 yards to paydirt as the rout was on. Things continued to go downhill for Midpark
on their next series as Marinkov grabbed a tipped pass at the 34 and ran it in
for six. The Shoremen reserves finished
out the final eight minutes, with sophomore QB Chris Jedlicka looking solid
both running and throwing.
