Homecoming 2006 got off to a happy start at Memorial Stadium Friday night, with the Shoremen thrashing Midpark by a 49-7 count.  The home team took control of the game early with a powerful ground game and a steady defense producing a 28-0 halftime lead.  The secondary contributed 3 interceptions, and the offense came up with its longest scoring play of the year  when Nick Firment hit Jordan Frank for a 77 yard TD in the second quarter.

The Shoremen kicked off and held Midpark to three and out on their first possession.  Taking over at the Midpark 40 after the punt, A.L. used six running plays to score the first points of the night.  Mike Haddad carried one yard for the TD and Drew Becker boomed the first of his six straight PAT’s to make the score 7-0.  After the teams exchanged punts, Alex Berry intercepted a third down pass and returned it to the Meteor 24 yard line.  Four plays later on 4th and 3, Haddad rumbled 17 yards for another TD  and a 14-0 Shoremen lead.   The defense again held Midpark without a first down, handing the ball over to the offense at the A.L. 29 after the punt.  14 plays later, Kevin Mansnerus cashed in from the one to make it 21-0.  Later in the second quarter, a holding penalty set the Shoremen back with a 1st and 20 from their own 23.  Firment rolled to his right and found Frank open down the right sideline.  Jordan snagged the pass around the Midpark 45, dodged a tackle around the fifteen, and raced in for six.  On Midpark’s next possession, the Meteors threw a little flare pass out in the right flat.  The Shoremen defender went for the ball and when it got by him, the receiver took the ball all the way down the Avon Lake 11 yard line.  But on 3rd down, Drew Becker picked off tipped pass in the back of the end zone to keep the score 28-0 at the half.

Alex Berry opened the third quarter scoring with a one yard plunge to extend the lead to 35-0.  This time, Midpark came right back, as QB Tim Soflkiancs scrambled away from pressure and tossed a bomb to Jason Haditsch at the Shoremen eight.  Two plays later, Soflkiancs scrambled again and found Jamaine Cook open around the five.  Cook took the ball in for the score, and after the PAT it was 35-7 Shoremen.  The Shoremen’s next drive started at their 35, and Alix Elamin accounted for all 65 yards on eight carries.  His 5 yard TD run put Avon Lake up 42-7.  The Shoremen reserves finished the game from there.  Kurt Friesner and Khouri Jaamey had a sack, as did Justin Malloy.  Jeremy Berner chipped in with some tough running for the second week in a row, and Scott Shaffer closed out the scoring with a 4 yard run.  Mick Sheard ended Midpark’s final drive with an interception, returning it to the Meteor 13 with about a minute and a half left.  The Shoremen took a knee three times to end the game.
