Avon Lake quickly and efficiently disposed of an overmatched Fairview squad 49-0 Friday night, in what was most likely last meeting ever between these long-time foes. The Shoremen dominated in all phases of the game as six different players scored touchdowns.

After Fairview went three and out on the game's opening possession, the Shoremen had a nice drive going. But an overthrown pass intended Trey Stross sailed right to a Warrior safety who picked it off. But after a third down sack by Chris Rau forced another punt, the Shoremen again drove deep into Fairview territory and scored the games first TD on a 13 yard pass from Mike Tift to fullback Sean Murello. Fairview quickly fumbled the ball back to the Shoremen, who rang up another quick score on a 3 yard plunge by Murello.

Early in the second period Trey Stross returned a punt about 40 yards to the 20 yard line. On the next play Trey caught a perfect pass from Tift in the end zone to make it 21-0. Again the Warriors went three and out, but this time Stross had trouble fielding a punt that sailed in the swirling wind and Fairview recovered at the Shoreman 13. The Warriors converted an fourth down from the three yard line and set up shop first and goal about a foot from the goal line. The Shoremen stopped four straight running attempts and took over on downs at the one yard line. It was a great goal line stand and a matter of pride for the A.L.'s defense as Fairview ran eight plays and could only manage 12 yards. The offense followed up with a 99 yard sustained drive, capped off by Tift's third TD pass of the night, a five-yarder to Andrew Means.

The number one offensive unit played just one series in the second half, stretching their lead to 35-0 on a four yard run by Bobby Doyle. Maxx Schmidt did some nice running on the next offensive series and Ben Willson scored from two yards out. Brian Pettys ended Fairview's next possession on an interception. His nifty runback gave the ball back to Avon Lake deep in Fairview's end of the field. Maxx Schmidt scored his first varsity touchdown late in the third quarter to wrap up the scoring. Both coaches emptied their benches as a lot of players got some game action in a scoreless fourth quarter.

Notes:

  • The victory extends the Shoremen's school record and state best winning streak to 22 games.
  • The Shoremen finished their 41 year series against Fairview with a 35-6 record - the highest win total for Avon Lake against any opponent.
  • Mike Tift now has 17 TD passes in just 7 games, matching Tyler Booher's regular season team record set just last year.
  • Johnny Lyons is now 46-46 on PAT's this year, an impressive string at any level of football.
