Matt Kostelnik and his Mount Union Purple Raiders opened the 2007 campaign in impressive fashion Saturday, annihilating Averett 75-7. The defending NCAA Division III national champs scored a team-record 52 points in the first quarter alone. Kostelnik blocked a punt which was returned for a TD, had one sack, and returned a punt 14 yards. Matt is a team captain for the Raiders this year, and is pictured on the cover of the Mount Union media guide (see the photo gallery).

In other action Saturday:

· Ashland senior running back John Schroeder carried 10 times for 41 yards and a TD as the Eagles opened their season with a huge 32-27 road win over Saginaw Valley State.

· Trey Stross caught one pass for five yards in Iowa’s 16-3 win over Northern Illinois.

· Ian Pace, who missed all of last year after knee surgery, got some playing time against Rhode Island. Ian’s Fordham Rams won the game 27-23.
