In their last game
of the year on their home field the Shoremen protected their turf, erasing a 14-0
deficit and holding off Brecksville’s last minute rally for a 17-14 win. Senior safety Mike Russell picked off a pair
of Tom Tupa passes in the fourth quarter, the second with the Bees at the
Shoremen eight yard line with under a minute to play. Kyle Kuhar returned a pick 12 yards for a
second quarter score that snatched the momentum and took the wind of the sails
of Brecksville’s high powered offense.
Chris Jedlicka had another nice game at quarterback, and Brad Brill
kicked a 25 yard field goal into a gusty wind for what proved to be the margin
of victory.
Brecksville
returned the opening kickoff to their 28, and moved the ball to the Shoremen
end of the field in eight plays before punting from the 43. Dontez Smith picked up 12 yards on a toss sweep
to the right, but the offense stalled at the 40 and had to punt. Max Seipel boomed a beauty up into the jet
stream, pinning the Bees at
their eight yard line.
After two runs only advanced the ball to the 10, Tupa threw back-to-back
bombs to his wideouts, moving to the
Starting from
their 33 after the second half kickoff, the Shoremen mounted a 14 play drive
deep into Brecksville territory. Unfortunately they came away empty handed when
Jedlicka’s pass to Jimmy Hessel on 4th & 16 came up a yard shy
of the first down. The defense held the
Bees to three yards and forced a punt to the Brecksville 47. Three Dontez Smith runs moved the ball to the
29, and Jedlicka hit Hessel for a gain the 15.
Brad Brill ran for five tough yards, but Brecksville stopped Smith for a
yard each on the next two plays to end the quarter with the Shoremen facing 4th
& 3 from the six. Jedlicka hit Jake
Young at the goal line and even though both of his feet were in the end zone, a
myopic zebra spotted the ball at the one.
Lucas barged in from there and the Shoremen led for the first time,
17-14. Brill’s kickoff pinned the
returner against the sideline at the 10, and David King smacked him down at the
20. After a 20 yard completion on first
down, Tupa tried to throw a deep post that was picked by Russell on a diving
catch. The teams exchanged three and
outs, then the Shoremen managed one first down before punting to the Bees’ 36
with four minutes left. Aided by a pass
interference call, the Bees were at the Shoremen eight with 52 seconds to go
when they took their last time out. Tupa
rolled right and threw into the end zone, where the ever-alert Mr. Russell
snagged the pass and returned it 100+ yards for an apparent touchdown. The return was called back for holding, but it mattered not
as Jedlicka took a knee and the Shoremen recorded another memorable victory on
Senior Night.
