The Shoremen erased another unpleasant memory from last year, crushing the Brecksville-Broadview Heights Bees by a final score of 48-14.  In what is becoming the trademark of this year’s team, Avon Lake combined a crushing ground game with a lightning-strike pass attack and a dominant defensive performance.   Our hometown heroes were up by a 48-0 count just 75 seconds  into the third quarter when Coach Dlugosz began pulling the starters and gave the reserves a ton of valuable playing time.  The two Brecksville scores came in the last three minutes of the game  as the Bees’ starters remained on the field to the bitter end.

Avon Lake won the toss and deferred.  A nice kick by Joe Gaydosh and perfect coverage pinned the Bees on their own 25 to start the game.  A poor punt on 4th and seven put the Shoremen offense in business right at midfield.  Running an iso behind a block from Mike Haddad, Jeff Tell broke a tackle at the line, bounced outside to the left, and turned on the jets as he outran everyone for a 50 yard score.  Joe Prendergast tacked on the PAT and the home team led 7-0 after just one play on offense.  After an exchange of punts,  Bees’ fullback Kosta Papagianis bounced a dive play outside and raced 47 yards to the A.L. 32.  But the threat ended when Shoremen recovered a fumble and took over at their own 31.  A series of runs by Haddad and Tell moved the ball to the Brecksville 29 and the quarter ended with the Shoremen leading 7-0.

The second period is one the Bees would like to forget as the Shoremen blew the game wide open with four touchdowns.  After Tell ran to the 19, Nick Firment found Dan Weimer in the left corner of the end zone for an easy TD.  The PAT was botched leaving the score 13-0 with 11:31 to play in the half.  After two Brecksville punts sandwiched around one by Avon Lake, the Shoremen offense started from their own 20.  Seven plays later, Tell waltzed in untouched on a beautifully blocked counter.  The key play of the drive was a pass from Firment to Weimer, who caught the ball over his shoulder in full stride for a 30 yard gain to the Bees’ 19.  Tell carried for the two point conversion to make it 21-0 with just 3:36 until halftime.  The  Shoremen “D” again forced a three and out, giving the ball back to the offense at the 20 after another touchback.  After a dropped pass, a sweep for no gain, and a holding penalty led to 3rd and 20, Avon Lake let the play clock run down and took a time out with 1:43 to play.  When play resumed, Firment handed off to Haddad on a trap over the right side and once Mike broke through the line, there was no catching him .  The 80 yard TD and Prendergast’s’ PAT stretched the lead to 28-0.  Yet again, it was three plays and a punt for the Bees.  But this time, a high snap flew over the punter’s head.  He picked it up in the end zone and tried to get the  kick away, but it was blocked and turned over to the Shoremen at the two.  Haddad crashed across the goal line, Prendergast added the conversion, and when halftime finally came The Shoremen had a commanding 35-0 lead.

Receiving the kickoff to open the second half, the Shoremen started from their own 23.  With the Bees packed in close to stop the run, Firment faked play action and threw another beauty down the right sideline to Ryan Scherer for a 77 yard TD pass.  The kick was good and the score stood at 42-0 just seconds into the third quarter.  Less than a minute later, Haddad made a great drop in pass coverage from his linebacker spot and tipped a Brecksville pass up in the air.  Matt Mudry snagged the interception and weaved his way through the befuddled Bees for  another six points.  The kick was wide making it 48-0 just  a minute and 17 seconds into the third quarter.  The Shoremen began to substitute after that and played their reserves against Brecksville’s first string for the rest of the game.  The Bees managed a couple of garbage scores in the last three minutes to account for the final tally of 48-14.

Notes:

·       Haddad had his usual game at fullback: 11 carries for 155 yards and two TD’s.  Mike now has 686 yards rushing in four games this year.

·       Tell rushed for more than 100 yards for the second time this year with 130 yards and two TD’s on 17 rushes.

·       Nick Firment continues to torment opposing defenses with his deft passing.  After going 4-8 tonight for 2 TD’s, his season numbers stand at 24-42 for 8 TD’s and no INT’s.
