The Shoremen made
short work of the Berea
Friday night, pounding the Braves by a 49-6 count. Jeff Tell started at tailback and ran for 96
yards and a touchdown in his first action since he broke his collarbone in the
third game of the season. Alix Elamin
had a huge night running the football, piling up130 yards and scoring on runs
of 2, 23, and 37 yards. Tom MacGeorge
and Matt Rehker caught TD passes. On
defense, the Shoremen intercepted 3 passes and held the Braves scoreless until
the Braves score on a long run late in the fourth quarter against the Shoremen
reserves.
Berea received the kickoff and the Shoremen stuffed the
return at the Braves seven. But two
quick completions gave the home team a first down at the 20. Another completion made in second and five
before Jordan Frank broke through to drop the QB for a five yard loss. A third down incompletion forced a punt, and Avon Lakes
offense took over at their own 43. Tell
ran a toss sweep to the on first down for 30 yards, following a nice block by
Mike Haddad. Four more running plays
gave the Shoremen a first down at the five.
But false start penalty followed by a 10 yarder
for an illegal block set the Shoremen back to the 18. Shaffer took a pitch to his right, pulled up,
and hit MacGeorge in full stride in the end zone for the first TD of the
game. Drew Becker nailed the conversion
for a 7-0 lead. The Shoremen were
flagged for a rash of penalties during the rest of the first quarter, resulting
in a missed field goal and a punt. Late
in the period, Berea
botched an option pitch and the Shoremen recovered at the Braves’ seven. Haddad ran it in from the four to open the
second quarter and A.L. was up 14-0.
Drew Becker intercepted on the second play of Berea’s next series, but the Shoremen gave it right back
when the Braves picked off a pass intended for MacGeorge at their own two. After a first down, the Braves punted and
Scott Shaffer returned the ball to the 35.
Six plays later Tell powered in from five yards out and the romp was
on. Berea went three and out, and another fine
return by Shaffer set up the Shoremen at the 19. Alix Elamin scored on 4th & 2 and then caught a
two-point conversion pass from Firment for a 29-0 halftime lead.
The Shoremen
received the second half kickoff and move quickly downfield as Scott Shaffer
bounced an off-tackle play outside for a big again deep in Braves’
territory. Firment hi Rehker with a 13
yard scoring strike to extend the lead to 36-0.
Anthony Dominguez ruined the next Berea
possession with a leaping grab for an interception. The offensive line continued its stellar
performance, opening a big hole for Elamin as he raced in from the 23. Nick Gamellia’s PAT
attempt just missed, hitting the right upright.
The Shoremen reserves took over for the rest of the game. Berea
scored once in the fourth quarter on Stephen Simpkins’ long run. Elamin added his third TD on a 37 yard sprint
around left end. Zach Netzler ended Berea’s
offense for the night with an interception and a nice return, and the Shoremen
ran out the clock to end the game.
Notes:
·
Elamin rushed for
over 100 yards for the second time this season.
·
Rehker’s touchdown catch was the first of his varsity career.
·
The Shoremen
totaled five takeaways,
recovering two fumbles in addition to their three INT’s.
·
Shaffer is now three for four passing on the
season. All three completions have been
to MacGeorge, who took two of them in for touchdowns and ran the other down to
the one yard line.
